The Carmelites of Compiegne - Martyrs of the French Revolution Personalized Not sure how to handleDuring the height of the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution, sixteen Carmelite nuns from Compigne were arrested and executed by guillotine on July 17, 1794. Devoted to their faith, they had offered their lives for peace and sang, "Veni, Creator Spiritus" as they faced death. Just ten days later, the Reign of Terror ended. Pope Francis canonized them in December 2024. Their story endures as a powerful symbol of faith and peaceful resistance.
