John Bartholomew, a significant cartographer from 1831 1893 learned his trade from his own father. His son, John George Bartholomew (1860 1920) brought the family firm to prominence. Eventually five generations were involved in the company trade. The maps produced by the Bartholomew family were the first maps to use color
