Colton in 1886 shows how large London had become at the peak of the British Empire. Most of what we now consider the inner city boroughs are in place but the suburbs are still fields and forests. It is also clear from this map how south London was mostly a collection of smaller towns and villages, while the London north of the river was already very densely populated indeed. This map looks great at all sizes: 16x20
