I’m at a loss
A Society Beauty Black & White Born in GlasgowThis is an archetypal Belle Epoque portrait, painted in 1899 it shows a young woman of wealth and social standing. Although dressed in sumptuous silks, it is a domestic moment rather than a formal coming of age or marriage marker. She looks mildly peeved at being interrupted, a well loved book in hand. It is looser and more Parisian than his later works and as it surfaced in America it could well be one of the many wealthy heiresses wearing a furrow
