It was designed to be a high performance fighter plane that could compete with the advanced German fighters of the time. The P 47M was powered by an improved version of the Pratt & Whitney R 2800 engine, which gave it a top speed of over 460 miles per hour and a service ceiling of over 42,000 feet.
