The lacquer and paintings on this round box would once have been much brighter
as well as three removable shelves for use as a more general purpose storage cupboard
circa 1880
this beautiful sideboard is based on the famous painted furniture of Shanxi province in central China
It also has the 'S' shaped backrest with a symbol in carved relief - a bat for good luck or a butterfly for happiness
