It was created by John Speed and engraved by Jodocus Hondius, and originally published in Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine". The coat of arms of the Monarch of the United Kingdom appears in the top right, along with the Monarch's motto Dieu et mon droit God and my right. Many of the towns, villages and cities in Sussex are already visible
