ローマで建築家ジオ・ポンティ（Gio Ponti）のもと、モダニズム建築家としてキャリアをスタートさせた作者は、第二次世界大戦終了後、サンパウロ美術館の立ち上げのため招致されたアートディーラーの夫ピエトロ・マリア・バルディ（Pietro Maria Bardi）とともにブラジルに移住。ブラジルの文化に根ざしたモダニズム建築を発表した。1951年、最初の作品である自邸「ガラスの家（Casa de Vidro）」を設計し、夫とともに生涯を過ごすこととなる。また、1968年に開館したラテンアメリカのモダニズム建築の代表作である「サンパウロ美術館」の設計も担当。この美術館のために、ガラス製イーゼルの展示システムを作り上げ、現在でもその先鋭性は失われていない。
