When the pieces are dry they are painted with gesso on all sides to seal the paper. Fired and patinated copper is adhered to the paper and a cement mixture is spread on the bottom 2 3 of the piece, below the metal to form the cracked surface. After the cement dries it is carefully sanded and the top 1 4 of the cement is stained with a thin wash of black paint. Encaustic is worked over the
